Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Loki was born in Jotunheim to Laufey, king of the Frost Giants, and his queen Farbauti. He was far smaller than a giant should be, and his parents were so embarrassed by him that he was kept apart from the rest of his people. When Odin led Asgard to war against Jotunheim and killed Laufey, he found the boy and, out of a mix of honour, pity and duty, took him home to be raised alongside his own son, Thor. A much later story in Thor Vol 3 #12 adds a twist: a grown Loki travelled back in time, turned Odin's father Bor to snow, haunted Odin in Bor's likeness to steer him toward adopting a beaten king's child, and goaded Laufey into the battle that killed him, arranging his own adoption.

Asgard valued strength and courage in battle above everything, and by that measure Thor outshone his brother at every turn. Loki's talent was sorcery, and as the two drifted apart his jealousy turned into a wish to destroy Thor and become the mightiest power in Asgard. The wiki's account of his early mischief has him cropping Lady Sif's golden hair, then tricking rival dwarves into forging treasures that included Mjolnir; his meddling left the hammer with a short handle, and the dwarves sewed his lips shut in payment. He later arranged Balder's death with a mistletoe spear thrown by the blind god Hoder and was the only being who would not weep for him, which earned him years chained under a serpent's dripping venom while his wife Sigyn tried to catch it in a bowl.

A Loki first turned up in Venus #6 (1949) as ruler of the Greek underworld, a Golden Age version the wiki says was later folded into the modern character. The Loki readers know arrived in Journey Into Mystery #85. Odin had sealed him inside a tree until someone shed a tear for him, so Loki made a leaf fall into Heimdall's eye and walked free. He tracked Thor to New York, hypnotised him and parted him from his hammer, not knowing that Thor turns back into Dr. Don Blake after sixty seconds without Mjolnir, which broke the trance. Thor chased him across the city and hurled him from the top of the Empire State Building back to Asgard to face Odin.12345

The record, by era

  1. 1962-1963
The brother who would not quit Silver Age debut

Banned from leaving Asgard after his first defeat, Loki keeps finding new ways to strike at Thor. He hypnotises Jane Foster and forces Thor to choose between saving her and keeping his hammer, then traps Mjolnir behind a force field so Don Blake cannot change back. Chained by Odin with Uru links, he frees himself by enchanting the chains to pull Mjolnir to them and goes after the hammer again. Each scheme ends with Thor outwitting him and handing him back to Odin.1267

The heroes who answer the call band together instead, and his plot becomes the founding of the Avengers. Over the next two years he keeps feeding Thor new enemies: he urges Odin to confront Thor over Jane Foster and seizes the throne while Odin is away, turns the convict Carl Creel into the Absorbing Man, and brings the ancient Destroyer armour back to life.1891011

He sends the Juggernaut after Thor and weakens him with spells, until both Avengers teams unmask and beat him. Not long after, Thor uses an ancient ritual fuelled by his own life force to kill Loki, a crime that gets Thor banished, but the time-traveller Zarrko soon pulls a living Loki out of the past.112131415

The young Loki works hard to earn Thor's trust through a run of adventures, carrying an echo of his older self around as a magpie he names Ikol. At the end of the run the boy learns that the only way to stop Mephisto using a crown made from his own fear is to let Ikol overwrite his mind. Notes from the archive

  • Before he became Thor's rival, a Loki appeared in the Golden Age series Venus, starting with Venus #6 in 1949, where he ruled the underworld and pursued the goddess of love. The wiki treats that debut as later absorbed into the character introduced in Journey Into Mystery #85.15
  • Loki's adoption was first shown in a Tales of Asgard back-up in Journey Into Mystery #112 (1965), which had Odin take him in as an infant; later stories describe him as a boy when Odin adopted him.13
  • Tom Hiddleston originally auditioned for the role of Thor before being cast as Loki.38
  • Loki's death in Thor: The Dark World was first meant to be permanent, but test audiences refused to believe it, so the ending was reworked to show him alive on Asgard's throne.3839
