Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Peggy Carter was born in June 1920 into a wealthy Richmond family regarded as Virginia royalty, and grew up alongside her brother Harrison. As a teenager she fell for a young Black man who ended the romance because of the racial climate of the time. That same night she was approached by Alexa Volkoff of the Daughters of Liberty, a secret society of women, who recruited her and became her handler. Trained into a sharp, resourceful operative, Peggy left for France once the Second World War broke out.

By 1943 she was a field agent in the French Resistance under the codename Agent 13. Working undercover in a cafe, she met a young soldier named Steve Rogers, and after Captain America walked in on her just after she had dealt with a room full of Nazi soldiers, the two began a lasting wartime romance. The Daughters had told her to stay close to Cap and keep him out of the wrong hands, but her feelings were genuine. She fought beside the Invaders, and in 1944 Nick Fury Sr. drafted her, Cap, Bucky and Dum Dum Dugan into a mission against Baron Zemo and the young Hydra.

In 1945 the two were sent on separate missions, and Peggy was captured by the Gestapo, tortured and lined up for a firing squad. As American troops stormed Paris she struggled with her captor, and a stray shell left her with amnesia, so she wandered away while Cap searched for her. She drifted around Europe for months until a family friend recognised her in Belgium and took her home, and news of Cap's apparent death sent her into a catatonic state. On the page she began as an unnamed woman from Cap's memories, glimpsed in Tales of Suspense #75 and shown in a full flashback in #77, and only received her name in Captain America #162 (1973).¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷

Notes from the archive

Peggy went unnamed for seven years. Tales of Suspense #75 and #77 (1966) show her only as Cap's lost wartime love, and Captain America #162 (1973) finally names her, presenting her as Sharon Carter's sister before later stories made her Sharon's aunt.²³⁴
The comics Peggy is an American from Virginia who fought in the French Resistance, while the MCU version is a British codebreaker from Bletchley Park who joined the Strategic Scientific Reserve.¹³⁰
Her 1970s romance with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Gabe Jones is noted by the MCU Wiki as one of the first interracial relationships in comics.³⁰¹
Emily Blunt was offered the role of Peggy before Hayley Atwell and turned it down. The MCU Peggy's middle name, Elizabeth, is also Atwell's own.³⁰
