Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Charles was the son of geneticist Brian Xavier and his wife Sharon, born while Brian worked on a secret project in Alamogordo, New Mexico that was later revealed to be run by Mister Sinister under a false name. In the womb he shared space with a twin sister who tried to destroy him; he lashed back with his budding mind and she was stillborn, although decades later she resurfaced as Cassandra Nova. When Charles was nine his father died in a lab explosion that colleague Kurt Marko could have prevented. Marko then married the widow and moved into the family's Westchester mansion with his bullying son Cain, and Charles's growing telepathy let him feel his stepfather's cruelty to his mother. His powers cost him his hair by his teens but helped him race through school; he graduated from Harvard at sixteen and went on to collect doctorates at Oxford.

At Oxford he fell in love with Moira Kinross, later MacTaggert, and they became engaged before he went into the army. In a remote temple he and Cain, who had tried to desert, found the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak; Cain became the Juggernaut and was buried in a cave-in, and a letter from Moira soon ended the engagement. Drifting after his discharge, Charles met his first evil mutant in Cairo, the Shadow King Amahl Farouk, and beat him in a psychic duel, which persuaded him to devote his life to protecting both humans and mutants. In Haifa, Israel, he worked at a clinic for Holocaust survivors, where he befriended a survivor called Magnus and drew a young patient, Gabrielle Haller, out of catatonia. When Hydra kidnapped Gabrielle, the two men rescued her and revealed their powers to each other, and Magnus left with Hydra's Nazi gold, sure that humans and mutants could never share the world. Gabrielle later had Charles's son, David, without telling him.

Searching the Himalayas for others like him, Charles found a walled city enslaved by the alien Lucifer and led its people in revolt; in revenge Lucifer dropped a huge stone block on him, leaving him unable to walk. While recovering in India with nurse Amelia Voght he began designing Cerebro, then returned home to turn the Westchester mansion into Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. A final appeal to Magnus, now calling himself Magneto, at the abandoned Auschwitz camp went nowhere. With quiet help from FBI agent Fred Duncan, Charles recruited Scott Summers as Cyclops, followed by Bobby Drake, Warren Worthington III, Hank McCoy and Jean Grey. Calling himself Professor X, he sent his X-Men on their first mission to drive Magneto out of the Cape Citadel missile base.12345678

The record, by era

  1. 1963-1965
Founding the X-Men The Silver Age debut

Professor X's first issue shows him drilling his four students in his training room, welcoming Jean Grey as Marvel Girl and then guiding the team as it forces Magneto out of the Cape Citadel missile base. When Magneto's Brotherhood seizes the South American nation of Santo Marco, Charles shields his students from a booby-trapped door and lets them believe the blast took his powers, later admitting it was a test of whether they could cope without him. Then his stepbrother Cain returns as the Juggernaut; Charles tells the team about their shared past and, once the Human Torch burns away Cain's protective helmet, beats him with his mind.1293

Preparing for an invasion by the alien Z'Nox, Charles lets the dying villain Changeling take his place, lending him his powers and confiding only in Jean. When the impostor is killed in a battle with the subterranean Grotesk, the X-Men bury the man they think is their mentor while the real Charles works on in a psychically shielded room. He reappears to lead them against the invaders, linking the minds of decent people around the world to drive the Z'Nox away; the strain leaves him in a coma and, without his knowing, opens a mental link to the Shi'ar princess Lilandra.11011

When Jean, as the Dark Phoenix, wipes out an inhabited star system and the Shi'ar demand her execution, Charles first restores her mind in a psychic battle and then invokes a Shi'ar duel of honour to decide her fate. The fight on the Moon ends with Jean choosing to die rather than risk losing control again.1141516

When Magneto tears the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton, Charles abandons his attempt to reason with him and wipes his mind. The damage from that act fuses the darkest parts of both men into Onslaught, which destroys the school, abducts Franklin Richards and attacks New York. Thor finally breaks Charles free, the heroes destroy the entity, and Charles is taken into government custody, blaming himself for the backlash against mutants.119202122

Once rescued, he turns that exposure into X-Corporation, a worldwide support network for mutants, and walks again thanks to the healer Xorn. Xorn then unmasks as Magneto, cripples Charles again and attacks New York before being killed, leaving Charles alone in the ruins of Genosha and the school in the hands of Cyclops and Emma Frost.1232425

Cyclops throws him out of the school. During the chase for the first mutant baby born since that spell, Bishop fires at Cable and the infant Hope, and the bullet strikes Charles in the head. Notes from the archive

  • The Earth-616 page lists T.H. White's The Once and Future King as Charles's favourite book and notes that the films nod to it: Magneto reads it in his cell in X2, and Charles reads it to students in X-Men: Apocalypse.1
