Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.
Origin
Kurt's birth was planned by the mutant couple Mystique and Destiny. Destiny, a clairvoyant, foresaw that the demonic mutant Azazel would one day escape his prison dimension and seize the world, so she set out to raise a good-hearted child of his blood who could stand against him. Mystique married a Bavarian nobleman, Baron Christian Wagner, as cover, began an affair with Azazel, then copied his genetic template with her shapeshifting to make Destiny pregnant. When the Baron discovered the two women and tried to have them killed, Mystique murdered him. The baby was born with Azazel's demonic features and Mystique's blue colouring, and once a local mob turned on the household, Destiny slipped away with him. In older tellings Mystique is simply his birth mother, who abandoned the child she had with Azazel.
The infant was found floating down a river by the sorceress Margali Szardos, who raised him alongside her own children, Stefan and Jimaine, inside a travelling German circus called Der Jahrmarkt. Billed as a blue devil, Kurt endured cruelty from the circus owner but found comfort in his Catholic faith and became a star trapeze artist, with audiences assuming his looks were a costume. He fell for Jimaine, and his teleportation first surfaced when he jumped to catch her during a fall. He and Stefan swore a blood oath that Kurt would stop him if he ever killed without cause.
When the circus was sold and he faced being shown as a freak, Kurt ran away, survived an attempt to shoot him by teleporting in a cloud of sulphur, and was taken in by a village priest, Father Wagner, whose surname he later adopted. Around then Stefan went mad and murdered children near Winzeldorf; Kurt tracked him down and killed him by accident in the struggle. The villagers took Kurt for a demon and were about to lynch him when Professor Charles Xavier stopped the mob with his mind and invited him to join the X-Men. Under the codename Nightcrawler he went with Cyclops and the other new recruits to rescue the original team from the living island Krakoa, and stayed on afterwards.1234

Notes from the archive
- Dave Cockrum first sketched the character while serving in the US Navy on Guam, during a typhoon that kept him awake, and offered him to DC's Legion of Super-Heroes before coming to Marvel; DC turned the design down.1
- Teleporting upward fights both gravity and Earth's magnetic field, which makes it the hardest jump he can make. His record is a blind vertical leap of about a mile out of a sealed cell in Doctor Doom's castle.16
- When Kurt became a Spider-Man in 2023, the names tossed around for him included Antispider, Darkweb, Shadowspider and Terrorspinner. He settled on Spinnenmann, German for Spider-Man, while New Yorkers called him Hellcrawler.133
- Writer Chris Claremont toyed early on with making Mystique Kurt's father and Destiny his mother, an idea dropped at the time. A version of it became canon decades later in X-Men Blue: Origins #1, where Mystique uses Azazel's genetic template to father Kurt with Destiny.14
