Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Scott was the elder son of Christopher Summers, a US Air Force test pilot training to become an astronaut, and his wife Katherine; a few years after Scott's birth they had a second boy, Alex. When Scott was ten the family took Christopher's vintage de Havilland Mosquito on a holiday flight over Alaska and a Shi'ar scout ship attacked it. With only one parachute aboard, Katherine strapped it to her sons and pushed them out, and the aliens snatched the parents just before the plane exploded. The chute caught fire on the way down and Scott struck his head on landing, an injury that left him with lasting brain damage and confused memories of that day.

Declared orphans, the brothers were steered into the State Home for Foundlings in Nebraska, which the geneticist Mister Sinister secretly ran so he could study them. Sinister arranged for Alex to be adopted and left Scott isolated, posing as a fellow orphan to befriend and later bully him, quietly holding back his emerging powers and discovering that ruby quartz could block them. In his late teens Scott's optic blasts broke loose, punching through the orphanage wall. He fled, and when a stray blast knocked a load loose from a construction crane he blasted it aside to save the crowd below, only to be chased off by a frightened mob.

The incident made the news and drew the attention of the FBI, Professor Charles Xavier and the criminal mutant Jack Winters. Winters reached the runaway first and used him to get at a cyclotron that turned his body into living diamond. Xavier followed them, and together he and Scott destroyed the Living Diamond, an outcome that shook the boy badly. Xavier took him back to his Westchester mansion, gave him a costume and a ruby quartz visor, and named him Cyclops, the first of the X-Men. Scott then helped bring in Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl, and in the team's first mission he led them against Magneto at the Cape Citadel missile base.1234

The record, by era

  1. 1963-1968
Xavier's first student The Silver Age debut

Scott leads the original five X-Men from their first fight with Magneto at Cape Citadel, and Xavier makes him field leader despite his fear that he cannot control his own power. When the Professor pretends to have lost his telepathy, Scott has to bring the team home from a trap on Magneto's Asteroid M without him, which turns out to have been Xavier's final exam. Backup stories in the late 1960s fill in how he ran from the orphanage, fell in with Jack Winters and became the first X-Man, and for a spell he even works as a radio personality while Jean models.12546

When his friends leave he stays on as deputy leader of a far less disciplined group of loners and is haunted by Thunderbird's death on their second mission. Jean returns from a shuttle crash as Phoenix, and Scott later discovers his long-lost father leading the Starjammers in space without being told who he is. When Phoenix turns into the Dark Phoenix and wipes out a star system, Scott stands by her through the Shi'ar trial by combat until she ends her own life on the Moon, and he quits the team in grief.178910

When news comes that the real Jean is alive, he walks out on his family to found X-Factor with the other original X-Men, posing as mutant hunters while secretly training young mutants. Madelyne resurfaces as the demonic Goblin Queen and tries to sacrifice Nathan, and her death reveals she was a clone Sinister built from Jean to breed with Scott. Capabilities

Optic blasts

Fires an unheated, ruby-coloured beam of concussive force from his eyes, held back only by his eyelids or ruby quartz lenses.1

Beam control

Tunes width and force from a pencil-thin jet to a 90-foot sweep; at full power it can puncture an inch of carbon steel at close range.1

Spatial awareness

An instinct for angles lets him bank his blasts off a dozen or more surfaces and still hit his target.1

Energy immunity

His own beams cannot hurt him, and he and his brother Havok are immune to each other's powers.1

Tactician and leader

Long-time leader of the X-Men who reads a fight as it unfolds; on Krakoa he wrote defence plans for every scenario he could imagine.1

Martial artist

Holds black belts in judo and aikido, can beat six ordinary men with his eyes shut, and has held his own against Wolverine.1

Expert pilot

Flies fixed-wing aircraft at an expert level, a skill he shares with his father.1

Telepathic resistance

Years close to telepaths taught him to resist intrusion and keep secrets from powerful mind readers.1

Source of power

Born a mutant; his eyes channel concussive force from another dimension, and a childhood head injury left him unable to shut it off.1

Notes from the archive

  • In 1968 the X-Men briefly try out ordinary jobs: Jean becomes a fashion model and Scott a radio personality, and he shows her the records he has to play at the station.61
  • After Scott bled out in a New York alley and was resurrected, he spent a period posing as the hero Captain Krakoa in a Forge-built battlesuit that faked flight and plant powers, so the public would not realise mutants could come back from the dead.140
  • In Death of X, Scott dies of Terrigen poisoning almost as soon as the story begins. The defiant Cyclops seen fighting the Inhumans for the rest of the series is a telepathic projection Emma Frost created to hide his death.131
  • During his post-Avengers vs. X-Men revolution, people in the Marvel Universe began wearing shirts and carrying signs saying "Cyclops was right", and he adopted a costume with a large X across his face.129
