    X-Men Origins: Wolverine FOX

Taylor Kitsch This Remy is a New Orleans card player who got the name Gambit beating guards at poker during two years locked in Stryker's island prison before escaping. When Logan tracks him down for the prison's location, Gambit takes him for a Weapon X agent and fights him, breaks up his brawl with Victor Creed, and then flies him to the facility on Three Mile Island. He comes back during the climax to save Logan from falling wreckage and help the freed mutants, but finds Logan's memory wiped and leaves after telling him his name.12

    Deadpool & Wolverine MCU

Channing Tatum This variant has been stranded in the Void by the TVA for so long that he cannot remember his past; he is part of X-23's Resistance and greets Deadpool and Wolverine at their hideout by blowing up a bottle of his liquor that Logan has helped himself to. He rides with the group to Cassandra Nova's compound and holds off her army with charged cards and his staff while the two leads go after Nova, then is left behind when they escape through her portal. The MCU Wiki names no home universe for him, while the Marvel Fandom wiki assigns him to Earth-TRN1401, which it describes as the reality of an unmade Gambit film.345678

Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

The baby who became Remy LeBeau was born in New Orleans with eyes that glowed red, abandoned for it, and carried off from the hospital by members of the city's Thieves Guild. They nicknamed him "le diable blanc", the white devil, and believed he was the child a prophecy said would unite the city's warring guilds. He grew up among a gang of street thieves who taught him their trade, and at about ten he tried to lift the wallet of Jean-Luc LeBeau, the Guild's patriarch, who took the boy home and adopted him. In those years he also met Bella Donna Boudreaux, daughter of the head of the rival Assassins Guild, and fell for her at first sight.

To cement a truce between the two guilds, Remy and Bella Donna were promised to each other in an arranged marriage. Her brother Julien refused to accept it and challenged Remy to a duel; Remy killed him in self-defence, and both guilds agreed he had to be thrown out of New Orleans if the peace was to hold. Believing Bella Donna would be miserable in exile, he left her behind. He drifted around the world as a master thief, using his mutant knack for charging objects, playing cards above all, with explosive energy, until the power began to run beyond his control and he went to the geneticist Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister, who cut away part of his brain to bring it down to a level he could manage.

The favour came with a price. Sinister had Remy recruit the mercenary Marauders and lead them into the Morlock tunnels under New York, without telling him the goal was slaughter. When the massacre began Remy tried to stop it, but Sabretooth cut him down and left him for dead, and the only life he could save was a young Morlock girl who would grow up to be the X-Man Marrow. Later he crossed paths with Storm, who had been turned into a child with no memory and was living as a thief; he pulled her out of a trap set by the Shadow King, the two became partners in New Orleans, and once Storm had her memory back and Charles Xavier returned from space, she vouched for Remy and brought him into the X-Men.1234567

The thief who rescued Storm The debut

Pursued to an aircraft junkyard and then to Mardi Gras in his home town, he is captured by Nanny and the Orphan-Maker, and Storm recovers her memory while rescuing him. He proposes they stay partners, she tells him about the X-Men, and the pair later turn up at the wrecked X-Mansion before Storm sponsors his place on the team.13425

He stays with Excalibur even after Rogue is elected to the X-Men, and on the Knights of X quest in Otherworld he hurls a Death tarot card charged with the Starlight Citadel's magic at the wizard Merlyn, who turns it back on him. Because the card stands for change rather than death, he is drawn into the Siege Perilous and returned, opening a road for a Krakoan army led by Rogue. Haven House and the Left Eye From the Ashes

After Krakoa falls, Remy, Rogue and Wolverine face down a dragon in Mexico, and Remy walks away with its Left Eye of Agamotto on a one-year loan. He brings four hunted teenagers, the Outliers, to Haven House in Louisiana, which becomes the base of Rogue's new X-Men, and uses the Eye to save it from Sarah Gaunt. The artifact gradually corrupts him with a craving for flesh; he bites Rogue and fights his friends before agreeing to accept help, and when the year is up the Eye refuses to leave him. During an alien invasion he turns into a winged, dragon-like creature called Wyvern, and he later secretly swaps places with his counterpart from Earth-295, home of the X-Men of Apocalypse.14041424344

Capabilities

Kinetic charging

Charges objects by touch so they explode; a charged playing card bursts with the force of a grenade, and larger objects take longer.1

Enhanced conditioning

His constant inner charge sharpens speed, strength, reflexes and agility, letting him dodge bullets and lasers.1

Hypnotic charm

A subtle psionic pull in his voice makes people inclined to believe and agree with him, though strong or wary minds resist.1

Telepathic static

The charge in his body creates static that shields his mind from telepaths, stronger with a charged object near his head.1

Thrown-weapon mastery

Throws cards, knives, bolas and balls with great accuracy, his cards serving as long-range explosive projectiles.1

Staff fighting and martial arts

A master of the bo staff who also uses savate, street fighting and acrobatics.1

Master thief and strategist

A trained thief and lockpick, and a natural strategist the wiki rates among the best of the X-Men.1

Source of power

Born a mutant who converts the potential energy stored in objects into explosive kinetic energy.1

Notes from the archive

  • Gambit's first published appearance came before the story that introduces him: X-Men Annual #14 went on sale on 29 May 1990, three weeks ahead of Uncanny X-Men #266, even though the Annual is set after it. The wiki therefore lists the Annual as his first appearance and #266 as his first full one.123
  • The brain surgery that limited his powers is a time loop: Sinister removed the tissue in Remy's past, Remy had it reattached in Victorian England, and the 19th-century Essex who did the work recognised it as his own and realised he would one day perform the original operation.11617
  • Remy carries an Avengers identity card he stole from Clint Barton.150
  • He owns three cats, Oliver, Lucifer and Figaro, which were a gift from his future mother-in-law Mystique; the wiki notes that all three share their names with cats from Disney films.15152
