Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Almost nothing about Mystique's beginnings is certain, and even the name Raven Darkhölme is one she chose. She has said her powers surfaced when she was twelve and that she had to fight just to stay alive, and her shape-changing body has kept her going far past a normal lifespan; by her own account she is well over a hundred years old. Toward the end of the 19th century she met Irene Adler, an Austrian mutant who had filled thirteen volumes with visions of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and been left blind by the effort. Raven agreed to help decode the books and to stop the worst of them from coming true. The two became lifelong partners and lovers, and by 1895 Raven was even solving London cases as the detective "Sherlock Holmes" with Irene at her side.

The decades that followed were a run of borrowed identities and broken trust. In 1921 she slipped free of a Mexican firing squad alongside a drifter called Logan, recruited him for a Kansas City bank job and then tipped off the police so the rest of her crew took the fall. Posing as a German agent, she had a short affair with Victor Creed, the future Sabretooth, and later walked away from their son Graydon when he turned out to have no powers. Married in human guise to the German nobleman Christian Wagner, she secretly carried on with Irene, who became pregnant, apparently while Raven wore the shape of the mutant Azazel. Raven killed the suspicious baron, passed the pregnancy off as her own and fled when villagers attacked the blue-skinned baby, who grew up to be Nightcrawler. Years later she and Irene took in a gun-toting runaway from Mississippi named Anna Marie and raised her for about a decade as their foster daughter, the future Rogue.

As Raven Darkhölme she climbed the federal civil service to become deputy director of DARPA inside the Defense Department, a post that handed her military secrets and experimental weapons to use for her own ends. That is the role she had when readers first met her in 1978, as a shadowy figure in the pages of Ms. Marvel who soon boards the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier wearing Nick Fury's face to steal the secret Centurion project. Before long she founded a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, borrowing the name of Magneto's old group, with Irene, now called Destiny, alongside Avalanche, the Blob and Pyro, and announced it to the world by trying to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly.1234567

Helicarrier, with Raven disguised as Nick Fury, and walk off with the top-secret Centurion project, nearly getting caught by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine on the way out. The stolen hardware is then turned on Ms. Marvel, and while the armoured Centurion fights Carol Danvers and the Avengers across the city, Raven calmly reports back to her superiors.1234

Notes from the archive

  • Mystique's earliest published appearance is now counted as Marvel Preview #5 (April 1976), an adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Immortal X-Men #8 (2023) revealed that the Sherlock Holmes of Marvel's history was Raven in disguise, making that story her unofficial debut two years before Ms. Marvel #16.561
  • Chris Claremont has said he originally wanted Mystique and Destiny to be Nightcrawler's biological parents, with Mystique taking male form, but Marvel would not allow it at the time. The idea finally became canon in X-Men Blue: Origins #1, cover-dated January 2024.17
  • The wiki counts Deadpool among Mystique's spouses: a flashback in Deadpool #27 (2014), the issue built around Deadpool's wedding, shows her posing as a woman named Lurleen.138
  • Unlike her film counterparts, the comics Mystique was never Magneto's lieutenant. Before Magneto's own X-Men team of the 2010s, the two had crossed paths only a handful of times and barely knew each other.1
