Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Cassie Lang came into comics as the reason her father became a hero. In Marvel Premiere #47 she is Scott Lang's young daughter, born with a heart defect that will kill her without surgery. The one doctor who can operate, Erica Sondheim, is being held by Darren Cross at Cross Technological Enterprises, so Scott steals Hank Pym's Ant-Man suit and Pym Particles to get her out. Cassie is seen only in flashback in that first issue; by the end of the next one the operation has worked.

Having Ant-Man for a father meant growing up among heroes. She lived for a time at Four Freedoms Plaza while Scott worked for the Fantastic Four, became close to Kristoff Vernard, the boy Doctor Doom had raised, and spent weekends at Avengers Mansion once her father joined the team. Without telling anyone, she used that access to expose herself to Pym Particles again and again over several years, hoping it would one day let her be a hero too.

It did. After Scott was killed in the attack on Avengers Mansion, Cassie went to the ruins to recover his equipment and ran into the newly formed Young Avengers. In the middle of a shouting match at the gates she suddenly grew to giant size, revealing powers she had been building in secret. She joined the team and chose the codename Stature.12345

The record, by era

  1. 1979
The Girl Ant-Man Was Made For Bronze Age debut

Cassie's first two appearances are really her father's story. In Marvel Premiere #47 she is the sick child, seen in flashback, whose failing heart pushes Scott into stealing the Ant-Man gear. By the end of #48 Scott has rescued Dr. Sondheim, Cassie's operation has succeeded and Hank Pym has let him keep the suit. The bond between a reformed thief and the daughter he did it for would drive both characters for decades.231

  2. 1994-2004
Growing Up in Headquarters Child of heroes

Cassie spent her childhood inside superhero bases. When Scott became the Fantastic Four's stand-in scientist, father and daughter moved into Four Freedoms Plaza, and while he worked with Heroes for Hire she accidentally switched on a dormant Super-Adaptoid. Once Scott joined the Avengers, her mother won a court order limiting his visits. Soon afterwards a disturbed man took Cassie from her school at gunpoint; Scott found her, and Jack of Hearts died ending the stand-off.6781

    Stature Rises Young Avengers

With her father dead, Cassie teamed up with Kate Bishop to climb into the ruined Avengers Mansion and recover his gear. Facing down the Young Avengers, she grew to giant size for the first time, then confessed to Tony Stark that she had been stealing Pym Particles for years. After the team saw off Kang the Conqueror she stayed on, took the name Stature and fought beside them through a looming new Kree-Skrull War, even as her mother learned her secret.945101

Choosing a Side Civil War and the Initiative

Cassie first joined the Young Avengers in resisting the Superhuman Registration Act, but after Goliath was killed she walked out on Captain America's rebels, wanting to fight villains rather than fellow heroes. She registered and trained with the Initiative at Camp Hammond. One morning she stopped the Growing Man only to see him land on her stepfather, and guilt shrank her almost out of existence until her teammates reached her. In the last battle of the Skrull invasion she grew huge and landed a giant-sized blow on the Skrull Yellowjacket.111213141

Recruited by a Trickster Mighty Avengers

Answering a call from Wiccan, Cassie and the Vision found the rest of the Young Avengers turned to stone, and were drafted into Hank Pym's new Mighty Avengers by a figure who looked like the Scarlet Witch but was really Loki in disguise. For a while she split her time between both teams, and she fought with the Mighty Avengers during the Siege of Asgard. Her file from this period puts her top height at roughly 250 feet, a size she cannot hold for long.15161

  6. 2010-2012
Killed by Doom The Children's Crusade

The hunt for the missing Scarlet Witch took the Young Avengers to Latveria, where they found Wanda with no memory and engaged to Doctor Doom. Travelling back to the day Jack of Hearts exploded, Cassie pulled her father clear of the blast and brought him into the present. The reunion was brief. When Doom stole Wanda's power and turned on the heroes, Cassie believed he had crushed Scott, grew to enormous size and knocked Doom down. He struck back and killed her. The Avengers later unveiled a memorial to Stature and the Vision.1718191

Doom's One Good Deed Rebirth and Stinger

An inversion spell briefly gave Doctor Doom a conscience. With only enough borrowed power to put right a single wrong, he chose to bring Cassie back to life. She returned to middle school and moved to Miami with her mother, and Scott followed. Augustine Cross then stole her Pym-charged heart to revive his father Darren, and Scott had to save her with a new one. Tired of being protected, she went undercover as Stinger to shut down a villains-for-hire app. When that went wrong Scott took the blame and stood trial, and her mother finally let the two work together as Ant-Man and Stinger.20212223241

The Family Business Ant-Man and Stinger

When Hydra took over the United States, Scott sent Cassie to safety in France, but Hydra found her anyway and used her to force him to spy on the resistance. Afterwards she carried on working beside him as Stinger, though his habit of living in an anthill embarrassed her. When the villain Macrothrax set out to wipe out humanity with his giant Bug Lords, Cassie beat Macrothrax herself while her father dealt with the monsters.2526271

Capabilities

Shrinking

She can shrink to the size of an ant, about half an inch tall.1

Growing giant

She can grow to gigantic size, taking on extra mass that toughens her bones and muscles and gives her superhuman strength and durability. Her top height is about 250 feet, which she cannot hold for long.116

Moods move her size

Her powers answer to her feelings: anger has made her grow without meaning to, and guilt once shrank her almost out of existence.113

Flight

Stinger's bio-synthetic wings let her fly.1

Insect command

Her Stinger helmet, with a boosted signal, lets her talk to and direct insects.1

Hand-to-hand combat

Better than average in a fight, from self-defence classes and training with Captain America and Wolverine.1

Source of power

Years of secretly exposing herself to Pym Particles changed her body, so she can shrink or grow without a suit.14

As Stinger she added a cybernetic helmet that commands insects and bio-synthetic wings for flight.128

Self-defence classes after being kidnapped as a child, lessons from Captain America and Wolverine, and Initiative training at Camp Hammond.123

Notes from the archive

  • The Stinger name came from an alternate-future Cassie in Marvel's MC2 line, who used it as a founding member of that world's Avengers in A-Next #1 (1998), long before the main-universe Cassie took it in 2016.13233
  • Cassie was nine in her first appearance and almost fifteen when she joined the Young Avengers.1
  • Her first two crushes were both on boys with villainous ties: Kristoff Vernard, Doctor Doom's former ward, and Iron Lad, the teenage version of Kang the Conqueror.1
  • Solicitation text for She-Hulk Vol. 2 #1 (2005) called her Titan rather than Stature; the wiki records no reason for the change.134
  • Three actors have played Cassie in the MCU: Abby Ryder Fortson as a child, Emma Fuhrmann as a teenager in Endgame and Kathryn Newton in Quantumania. Fuhrmann has said she thought she was auditioning for a young Black Widow, and learned she had been recast only when Newton's casting was announced.29
  • Marvel considered adding Cassie digitally to Tony Stark's funeral in Endgame, but Kevin Feige said they decided to keep that scene for the heroes.29
