Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.
Origin
M'Baku was born and raised in the Jabari Village in Wakanda and grew into one of the country's greatest warriors, ranked behind only T'Challa himself. Wakanda's warrior tradition meant that the strongest fighter could claim the right to rule, and M'Baku was ambitious. T'Challa had banned the White Gorilla cult, a rival to the dominant Panther cult, but M'Baku defied him and revived it. He tracked and killed one of the rare white gorillas living in the jungles near Wakanda, and by bathing in its blood and eating its flesh he gained, through the cult's magic, a share of its enormous strength.
His chance came while T'Challa was away serving with the Avengers. In Avengers #62, M'Baku, left in charge as the king's stand-in, armed the Wakandan troops and then drugged a meal served to T'Challa and his teammates. Dressed in the forbidden white gorilla costume, he openly challenged the Black Panther's right to rule, rejecting the technology T'Challa had brought to Wakanda and wanting the nation to return to older ways. He beat T'Challa in a long fight and tied him beneath a giant panther idol, but when he tried to bring it down on his rival, the statue collapsed on M'Baku instead.
T'Challa left believing his enemy was dead, but the loyal follower N'Gamo revived him, and he went on to trouble the Avengers for decades. The comics called him by the alias Man-Ape, a name with racist connotations: the MCU Wiki records that Black Panther (2018) used only the name M'Baku because of the racial implications of a Black character dressed as an ape, while keeping the Jabari's worship of a gorilla god. This file uses M'Baku throughout. The Marvel Fandom wiki credits Roy Thomas and John Buscema as his creators.1234

Trusted to stand in for T'Challa while the king serves with the Avengers, M'Baku has Wakandan troops carry guns, claiming Klaw has returned, then drugs a dinner for T'Challa and his teammates. When the Panther wakes, M'Baku appears in the forbidden white gorilla garb and vows to replace worship of the panther god with the white gorilla. He beats T'Challa beside the nation's atomic fire pits and straps him beneath the panther statue, but the idol crumbles onto M'Baku himself as the freed Avengers rescue their teammate.12

Capabilities
The White Gorilla ritual lets him lift about 10 tons.1
His muscles tire slowly; he can fight at full effort for up to a day before fatigue sets in.1
Balance and coordination well past the limits of the finest human athletes.1
Tougher than a normal human: he can take repeated blows from super-strong foes or a fall of several storeys with little harm, though he is not invulnerable.1
Once rated Wakanda's greatest warrior after T'Challa; a seasoned hand-to-hand fighter with a gorilla-like style.1
Source of power
Hunted a sacred white gorilla, then bathed in its blood and ate its flesh; the ritual mystically passed the beast's strength to him.12

Notes from the archive
- The MCU Wiki records Black Panther producer Nate Moore explaining that the film calls him M'Baku rather than Man-Ape because a Black character dressed as an ape carries racial overtones, while the idea of the Jabari worshipping gorilla gods was kept as a counterpart to the Panther's own divine status.3
- Avengers #62 (March 1969) is also the first appearance of the White Gorilla cult and of W'Kabi, the Wakandan later played by Daniel Kaluuya in Black Panther (2018), where he leads the Border Tribe against M'Baku's Jabari.220
- According to the MCU Wiki, Michael Shaw, Mustafa Shakir and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II all auditioned for M'Baku before Winston Duke was cast.3
- Duke's entrance at the coronation became a 2018 social media craze, the "M'Baku Challenge", in which fans re-enacted his challenge scene.22
