Lewis Pullman (Clayton Cooper as young Bob) Bob, a former addict and the only survivor of O.X.E.'s Project Sentry serum trials, wakes with gaps in his memory inside a vault in Utah, escapes with Yelena Belova's group and finds he can fly and shrug off bullets. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine dresses him up as the Sentry and he easily beats the team, but he turns on her, and after her assistant Mel sets off a kill switch his dark side, the Void, takes over and pulls Manhattan's people into shadow worlds built from their worst memories until Yelena and the others reach him inside and help him take back control. He stays with the group Valentina brands the New Avengers, and in the post-credits scene, set fourteen months later, he says he is keeping away from his powers in case the Void returns as the team spots an incoming ship marked with a '4'.1234

Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.
Origin
The Sentry was launched in 2000 through Marvel's Marvel Knights line by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee, but he was sold to readers as a lost hero from the early 1960s. The wiki describes the promotional story that went with him: Wizard magazine reported that the widow of an artist named Artie Rosen had sent Marvel a forgotten box holding an old comic starring the Sentry and character sketches from 1961 signed by Stan Lee and Rosen. That story was later revealed to be an elaborate marketing hoax. The comic itself plays the same game. Sentry #1 cuts between pages told like a Silver Age comic, in which a boy called Robby Reynolds drinks a professor's secret formula and becomes a golden-suited hero, and the present, in which Bob Reynolds is an ordinary middle-aged New Yorker who is not sure whether he really was the Sentry or only read about him.
Inside the story, the Sentry was a celebrated hero in the years just before the Fantastic Four appeared. He was an equal to Reed Richards, a mentor figure to a young Spider-Man, an ally of the X-Men and a rare friend to the Hulk, and he had a wife, Lindy Lee, a young sidekick called Scout, a robotic aide called C.L.O.C. and a Watchtower base. How he got his powers has been retold several times. The first version made Robby the professor's teenage assistant, but later stories, which the wiki treats as the real account, say Bob was a young methamphetamine addict who broke into the professor's lab looking for drugs and drank the Golden Sentry Serum without knowing what it was, and the blast that followed killed his partner and two guards. The serum was traced back to Project Sentry, a 1947 effort by the United States and Canada to make the Super-Soldier Serum vastly more powerful.
His downfall came with the Void, a shadowy monster that played on people's fears and killed a huge number of people in Manhattan. When Bob discovered that the Void was the dark side of his own power, he, Reed Richards and Doctor Strange built a system that made everyone on Earth forget the Sentry ever existed, Bob included, and the Void disappeared with him. In the 2000 miniseries his memories return, the Void comes back with them, and he and Reed turn the system back on, erasing him a second time. A 2005 New Avengers story then explained the comics framing from inside the story: the mutant Mastermind had planted a mental virus in Bob on behalf of a villain called the General, and Bob, reaching out for help without knowing it, put his memories into the head of writer Paul Jenkins, who turned them into the comics readers had been holding.1234567
The record, by era
- 2000-2001Remembering the Sentry The forgotten hero
Bob Reynolds, living a quiet life with Lindy, senses the Void returning and starts to remember being the Sentry, while Lindy, upset to learn he lied about having quit, goes to stay with a friend. When he goes looking for the heroes he once knew, Professor X, Reed Richards and the rest have no idea who he is, and only the Hulk remembers him. Once he grasps that the Void is part of himself, he and Reed switch the Watchtower's system back on so the world forgets the Sentry again, and Reed buries the hero's reputation so the erasure will hold.12384

Emma Frost helps him see that Mastermind's tampering, not his own choice, wiped the world's memory, and he gets his memories and powers back and joins the New Avengers, with the Watchtower reappearing on top of Stark Tower.19107

Bob admits he first took the serum as a teenager to get high, and in Antarctica the Void tells him the formula was a massively boosted Super-Soldier Serum from a secret 1947 program called Project Sentry. Furious, the Sentry hurls the Void into the Sun and tells it he no longer needs it.111125

- 2026The Sentry is back Return
Alive once more, the Sentry turns up among the Avengers on the anniversary of the team's founding. The wiki says the returned Void now holds him to a bleak bargain: he lets it devastate alien worlds far away so that he can help people on Earth without interference, a trade that leaves him heavy with guilt. Back with Lindy, he announces his return to the world, helps the Fantastic Four stop a crystalline plague that has even infected the Hulk, and after his dog Watchdog dies he travels into the past to rescue Laika, the Soviet space dog whose death had stayed with him since he was seven, and makes her the new Watchdog.1343536

Notes from the archive
- The 2000 launch was built around a hoax: Wizard magazine ran a story about a 'lost' 1961 Sentry created by Stan Lee and an artist named Artie Rosen, which turned out to be a marketing stunt. Sentry #1 even had an 'Artie Rosen' variant cover.12
- Writer Paul Jenkins appears as himself in New Avengers #7 (2005), and by #10 the story explains that Bob had unknowingly planted his memories in Jenkins's mind, which is why the Sentry's past existed only as comic books.1107
- Steven Yeun was first cast as the Sentry in Thunderbolts* before dropping out, and Lewis Pullman took over. Pullman asked for the character's name to be changed because he had just played a 'Bob' in Top Gun: Maverick, but was told the name came from the comics.3940
- According to the MCU Wiki, the Thunderbolts* writers first planned to keep the comics idea of the world being made to forget Bob, but dropped it because it was too close to the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home.39
