    Black Widow MCU

David Harbour Unlike the comics' unpowered agent and husband of Natasha, this Alexei is the Soviet Union's only super-soldier, given a recreated serum, and from 1992 he poses as the father of young Natasha and Yelena in an Ohio cover family until the mission ends with the girls handed back to the Red Room. Jailed for life after falling out with Dreykov, he is broken out of a Russian prison by his 'daughters' in 2016, points them to Melina and pulls his old Red Guardian suit back on. In the attack on the Red Room he fights Taskmaster, then escapes with Melina and is left helping to free the remaining Widows.123

David Harbour Now running Red Guardian Limo Service in the United States and pining for his glory days, Alexei overhears Valentina plotting to kill Yelena, races to the rescue in his limo and argues over who sponsored the soccer team the group is named after. When Yelena falls apart he reminds her that she was the goalkeeper others could rely on, then follows her into the Void, and ends up unveiled as one of the New Avengers. A mid-credits scene has him pushing New Avengers cereal on a baffled shopper, and in the post-credits scene he proposes renaming the team the "New Avengerz" just before an extra-dimensional ship appears.4523

Origin, the comics by era, abilities and recorded feats.

Origin

Alexei Shostakov, the son of Andrei Shostakov, was born in Nizhny Novgorod and grew up to become one of the Soviet Union's most celebrated test pilots. His skill earned him the most secret and dangerous flights, while the state press trumpeted his other missions and he was named a Hero of the Soviet Union. His private life looked just as charmed: he married Natalia Romanova, known as Natasha, a famous ballerina.

The KGB decided the couple would make useful special operatives. While Alexei was away on a mission he was told he now belonged to the state and could never again contact his friends or even his wife, and Natasha was informed that he had been killed when an experimental rocket exploded. As the KGB had expected, she asked to do something worthy of his memory and was put straight into training as the spy who became the Black Widow, before eventually defecting to the United States under her maiden name. A much later retelling, Black Widow: Deadly Origin, has the two meet in 1957 while Alexei was a colonel and has Khrushchev fake his death in 1963.

Meanwhile the KGB remade Alexei as the Red Guardian, a costumed agent meant to be the Soviet answer to Captain America, armed with a round shield and a throwing disc that magnetically returned to his belt. The years of training hardened him into someone far colder and crueller than the husband Natasha remembered. When Communist China built the psychotron, a machine that could cause mass hallucinations, and offered to share it with Moscow in a plot against America, the Soviets sent General Yuri Brushov to judge the weapon and the Red Guardian to guard him, placing him under the command of Colonel Ling at a secret Chinese base.12345

Color him the Red Guardian The Silver Age debut

When Natasha is captured at Ling's base, Hawkeye and Hercules go after her; the Red Guardian takes Hawkeye prisoner and leaves Hercules trapped in the psychotron, then unmasks, and Natasha realises with horror that he is her husband. He gets his long-awaited duel with Captain America, only for Ling to knock Cap out with an electrified floor, which disgusts him. He takes a shot meant for Natasha as she wrecks the psychotron and, dying, spoils Ling's last attempt to kill the retreating Avengers, setting off the blast that destroys the base with him inside.126

Later still, a deceptive copy of him turns up in a second Legion of the Unliving assembled by the Grim Reaper.178910

Notes from the archive

  • Alexei was the first Red Guardian to appear in print, in Avengers #43 (1967), and the mantle next went to Tania Belinskaya in Defenders #35 (1976). A 1991 story in Namor, the Sub-Mariner Annual #1 then introduced a Second World War hero, Aleksey Lebedev, as the first Red Guardian, so the Marvel Fandom wiki now counts Alexei as the second.1252662728
  • The wiki's notes on Avengers #44 single him out as an unusually sympathetic Soviet character for 1960s Marvel: a committed communist who still turns on his own side because he will not see Captain America beaten by a cheap trick.6
  • The biggest screen change is the relationship: the MCU's Alexei is Natasha's adoptive cover-family father rather than her ex-husband, and he has super-soldier powers that his comics counterpart, a highly trained but unpowered fighter, never had.29231
  • The MCU's Alexei has "KARL" and "MARX" tattooed across his knuckles, and David Harbour suggested playing the part entirely in Russian with English subtitles, an idea the producers turned down.23
